The Challenge

Lyme Regis Town Council approached Blue Level to modernise their public website and beach hut booking system, which until recently had been entirely manual. The existing process relied on pen-and-paper records, phone calls, and in-person enquiries, creating a heavy administrative burden for council staff—particularly during the busy summer season. This manual approach made it difficult to manage availability, track payments, and respond quickly to customer requests, often leading to delays and double bookings.

At the same time, the Council’s website needed a complete overhaul. It had become dated, difficult to navigate, and was not optimised for mobile users. Essential information was buried under complex menus, and residents often had to call or visit in person to complete simple tasks. The goal was to digitise the entire booking process while redesigning the website into a modern, accessible, and user-friendly platform that would serve both residents and visitors. Blue Level was tasked with delivering a secure online booking system and a revitalised council website that would save time, reduce errors, and reflect the charm and coastal identity of Lyme Regis.

Our Approach

Our work began with a strategic review of the Council’s existing website and booking process, which was entirely offline. Until this project, all beach hut reservations were handled manually — logged on paper, confirmed over the phone, and updated by staff in person. We collaborated closely with the Council’s team to understand their day-to-day workflows and identify how a digital system could ease the administrative load while providing residents and visitors with a simpler, faster way to book. Accessibility and ease of use were central to every decision, ensuring that the new platform would meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards and perform seamlessly across all devices.

With those foundations in place, we designed and built Lyme Regis Town Council’s first fully online booking system. Developed from the ground up, it allows users to view live beach hut availability, make secure online payments, and receive instant booking confirmations. For staff, the new system automatically manages reservations and availability, dramatically reducing manual paperwork. Alongside this, we created a modern, coastal-inspired website that celebrates Lyme Regis’s local character while improving navigation, load speed, and SEO performance. Built on a robust content management system, the new site empowers council staff to update pages, publish announcements, and share community news with complete independence.

The Results

The result is a fully responsive and accessible website that brings together local information, tourism resources, and a powerful booking engine under one cohesive platform. Since launch, the Council has seen a significant increase in online bookings, with fewer calls and emails required to handle hut reservations and other seasonal enquiries.

Visitors now enjoy a smoother, self-service experience, and staff have more time to focus on community projects rather than manual admin. The new design also presents Lyme Regis in a more professional and engaging way, helping the town reinforce its reputation as one of the UK’s most picturesque coastal destinations.

The platform’s success demonstrates how thoughtful UX design and reliable technology can transform public-sector services — creating a digital presence that is both functional and community-focused. For Blue Level, this project reinforces our ongoing commitment to helping local authorities modernise online systems in ways that are sustainable, accessible, and genuinely useful to the people they serve.
